MY TOP TEN OTPs
7. Jackie and Hyde, That ’70s Show
Correct me if I’m wrong (actually don’t because I don’t care), but I believe this is the first example of my sad, sad love for doomed ships. Jackie and Hyde are not only, like, the epitome of the introvert/extrovert relationship I mentioned with Hanna and Caleb, but they were also completely ruined by the show, which only makes me love them more. Do I like rooting for the underdog? Do I just avoid happy-canon couples because the shows tend to be less interesting once the conflict has been resolved? (I’m looking at you, Jim and Pam.) Is it something I should talk about with a therapist? Whichever of those are true to whatever degree, the fact remains that nothing made me happier on this show than Hyde’s inevitable descent into loving Jackie, and watching him care about her more than he would ever admit to caring about anything.

8. Hannah and Caleb, Pretty Little Liars
So far we’ve addressed how I like ships where the characters bring out the best in each other and I’ve mentioned how I like doomed ships. Another major one for me is the introvert/extrovert relationship. As a self-admitted introvert, it just pleases me to no tomorrow when someone as outgoing and popular as Hannah finds their match with someone as introverted and sometimes even anti-social as Caleb. (Like, who does he ever even talk to besides the Liars and Lucas? Do hackers have other secret hacker friends?) I suppose it can be considered a subcategory of bringing out the best in each other, since extroverts tend to draw introverts willingly out of their shell, and introverts can have a mellowing effect on extroverts. These two have the added bonus of being insanely and adorably protective of each other and everyone they love.

9. Jules and Grayson, Cougar Town
This is one of those rare occurrences where the show pretty much got it right when it comes to couples. I don’t know what it is about official couples on shows that tends to make me squirm or turns me off to them. (We will also see, soon, my affinity for doomed ships.) But Jules and Grayson totally work for me. Perhaps it’s the way that everyone on this show behaves so impulsively and indulges themselves all the time that makes their affection seem so genuine. Like, people who wear wine glasses around their necks and spend REALLY extensive amounts of time doing things like green-screening and Penny Can do not remain in relationships out of mere obligation. Jules and Grayson spend time together because that’s what they want to be doing right now at this very moment. It keeps it alive and engaging and I’m all over it.

Some Thinky Thoughts On Last Night’s “Pretty Little Liars.”

First: Hannah Marin basically did nothing but be amazing and wear insane clothes last night. Like, unless you count her efforts to get a new phone after hers was a casualty of her awesome new habit of throwing electronics around the kitchen, none of her plot lines were furthered in any way. She was just wonderfully worried about her friend Spencer, and then BAM! She saves Jenna Hamilton from a burning building. (Also, I liked the shorts because I’m weird like that, but I don’t know that I can support the pink one piece pantsuit from the first half of the episode. Like, I couldn’t even tell you what Aria was wearing last night, is how distracted I was by Hannah.)

Second, speaking of Aria, she did find out some pretty good information on Ali, I’ll admit, but she did it all while being so Aria (“Aria” here meaning “dumb,” as it does) that it’s hard to acknowledge her contributions. But maybe that’s just me. On the personal front, any developments that happened in her life actually happened without any action on her part. It was all Ezra displaying that someday he might have the potential to grow a backbone, Byron displaying that there are no limits to his weird new obsession with his daughter’s sexuality, and Ella displaying that she is far too good for this bullshit situation.

Emily had only personal development, really, that I didn’t care about because fuck Maya for not realizing or appreciating what an amazing human specimen she had in Emily Fields. But I’m glad Pam is coming back, because damn if she didn’t get awesome.

And then there is Spencer, my spirit animal, who was torn apart by Toby bullshit while still managing to move at least a little bit forward with Hot Wren and make leaps and bounds with the whole sharing-a-sibling-with-Ali situation. Honestly, one of my favorite parts of the episode was watching the way her interactions with Jason have changed. She has mellowed towards him. The things about him that used to scare her or make her distrust him, she recognized now that they were the parts of him that reminded Spencer the most of herself. They are wired the same, the two of them.

Also, I continue to be amazed at Mona Vanderwaal, who spent last night alternately scheming, supporting Hannah and/or Spencer, and I can only assume going around passing out cell phones and/or hand sanitizer to everyone she came across while wearing clothes at least twice as insane as Hannah’s. Well done, Mona.

MY TOP TEN OTPs
10. Jenna and Matty, Awkward
Honestly, one of the things that’s so appealing about this show — a show that could easily have been another melodramatic piece of MTV tripe that I never would have tuned to with a remote on a ten-foot pole — is that it’s very easy to ship Jenna with both of her main love interests, Matty or Jake. I don’t hate Jenna and Jake together at all (which I feel is like committing shipper blasphemy, like how I’m a die-hard Packers fan but also have great affection for the Bears). But the thing is that Jake is already a nice, happy, totally well-adjusted dude. And if Jenna was my friend I’d want them to be together, because that’s healthy. But Jenna is a character on a show I like, and so I want her to be with Matty. ::shrug:: So sue me, I like that he needs her and how much better he is when she’s around. (Bringing out the best in each other is one of the major trends we’ll be noticing in this, our explanation of MY SHIPPER MIND.)

A creative spin on the original lyrics: “Gambino is a mastermind, Fuck a bitch to pass the time.”
Song: Freaks and Geeks (EP)
Notice how it works whether the giver (or receiver) is a boy or girl. This is the gold standard for Valentine’s Day cards. Ladies and gents, the only answer here would be “yes” or if you’re Abed, “Cool. Cool cool cool.”

YOU WANT TO GO OUT TONIGHT? IT’S JO’S BIRTHDAY.
MAYBE, BUT PROBABLY NOT. DIDN’T SHE JUST HAVE A BIRTHDAY LAST YEAR?
YEAH. SOME PEOPLE ARE ATTENTION STARVED. HOW ABOUT WE JUST STAY IN AND WATCH SERIALIZED TELEVISION FEATURING CHARACTERS TO WHICH WE HAVE A DEEPER EMOTIONAL ATTACHMENT THAN WE DO TO OUR ACTUAL FRIENDS AND FAMILY?
THAT SOUNDS WONDERFUL. CAN WE ORDER PIZZA?
OF COURSE.

Happy birthday Dan Harmon. There are so many wonderful things about you, and most of them seem to go straight over your head. Maybe you don’t see it, or maybe you are just humble…but I am not willing to overlook those for you. Thank you for carrying a new generation of show runners that communicate directly with their fans. Thank you for always sticking up for us and your cast, for investing yourself emotionally in both your fans and your work. Thank you for Community, a show that has taught us profound truths about human nature while making us grin ear to ear. Thank you for making us feel included and giving us power in the creative process that we didn’t know we were even allowed to have. Most of all…thank you mister Harmon for letting us into your life, and letting us be a part of yours.

I get it. The meaning of Christmas is the idea that Christmas has meaning, and it can mean whatever we want. For me it used to mean being with my Mom. Now it means being with you guys.
